Essential oils – the volatile aromatic liquids created by plants to help them maintain their own health and vitality – have been used by mankind for thousands of years to help enhance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Science has only recently begun to unravel just how these precious liquids, and the chemical constituents they contain, can work to affect the body and mind.
Azure Campbell, Owner of Essential Beginnings in Oshawa explains some of the more popular oils:
Promote healthy, vibrant skin – Many essential oils like Frankincense, Lavender and Rose are excellent to use for your daily skin care. Heal scars, eliminate breakouts, reduce wrinkles naturally with essential oils.
Relieve rash and skin irritation – Soothing essential oils like Lavender help to reduce redness and swelling and promotes deep healing. Lavender is also great for allergies, and soothing for sun burns.
Stimulate mental focus & energy – Lemon and Peppermint are just two of the essential oils that increase alertness and improve concentration. Studies have shown that diffusing just these two oils can dramatically increase test scores in students, and improve productivity.
Boost physical energy – Peppermint, Lemon and Rosemary are excellent at stimulating physical energy. These oils are excellent when rubbed on muscles before or after a workout, and will give you the stamina you need to make it through your day.
Support healthy immune function – The Thieves Blend, Tea Tree (Melaleuca) and Frankincense are just a few of the essential oils that are often used to defend against germs. Virtually all essential oils are antibacterial, but these oils are anti-viral and anti-fungal as well.
Improve respiratory health – Frankincense, Cypress, and Eucalyptus are oils that help to deepen breathing and increase oxygenation of the blood and cells. When you are breathing well, your body is receiving oxygen and you will feel better.
Sanitize the home of microbes, including bacteria, viruses, fungus and mold – You can add therapeutic oils to your mop water, and to a spray bottle with water for everyday cleaning. The Thieves blend is 99% effective at killing black mold!
Promote healthy gastrointestinal function – Peppermint is the perfect essential oil to relieving indigestion, acid reflux, cramps and bloating. It will even help you to feel full after meals and re-energize the metabolism. Add a few drops of peppermint to a glass of water – its cooling and refreshing and great for your digestion.
Provide natural stress relief – To help relax the body and mind you can try Lavender and Frankincense. Frankincense deepens breathing and helps to spiritually center and focus the body, and is wonderful to use with Yoga or Meditation. Oils can be applied throughout the day like a personal fragrance on the wrists and neck. Lavender is the most versatile oil, and help calm the mind just by inhaling its aroma.
Help normalize mood and create calm – Essential oils can be used anywhere easily throughout the day and they help ground and center the body. Apply oils the bottoms of your feet before leaving for the day, and apply during the day, to wrists or the back of the neck to help fight stress.
Relieve discomfort in the joints and muscles – Peppermint has been found to be more effective at soothing sore muscles than many drugstore brand pain creams. Peppermint contains 44% natural menthol which is a natural pain reliever, and will help to reduce inflammation. Blending oils that have been chosen for their ability to penetrate joints and muscles can reduce inflammation and speed healing. Perfect for athletes, or even the weekend warriors, and great on the bottoms of sore and tired feet after a long day.
Improve dental and oral care – Because essential oils are naturally antibacterial, they are wonderful for keeping our teeth and gums clean. Clove essential oil is a powerful anesthetic. Also, adding Lemon oil or Peppermint to water throughout the day, will not only taste great, but these essential oils will kill bacteria and freshen breath naturally!
